5A) Local Opportunities

High-priority violations: Alachua County restaurant inspections

·        The article written on January 23, 2019, mentions a list of restaurants that had a various violation of the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulations. After a series of inspections, 13 restaurants and fast food places in the area of Gainesville were accused of not fulfilling the hygienic requirements established in the state.
·        After a few inspections local places like Red Lobster, Subway, Red Robin, among others, weren’t following the sanitary regulations. Some violations such as foods not being stored at the right temperature, working with ingredients without gloves or using the same utensils for different ingredients. It is a big problem because such regulations are made to protect customers by avoiding allergic attacks from mixing inappropriate ingredients, or to avoid putting in risk customer’s health from infections from debris, and so on.
·        It is a problem for all Gainesville residents, specially for loyal customers of the companies mentioned in the article.

Gainesville delivery services expand options for staying in

·        The article starts with the story of a woman that does food deliveries for Bite Squad, and how convenient it is for her because of the flexibility of the schedule and the safety of the job. Then the author starts talking about how multiple food delivery companies have come to Gainesville and have created a competitive market for such service. They also talk about how this market has grown in the last few years and use some testimonies from local residents to better explain the situation
·        In this case I think it is an opportunity and has a positive impact in the Gainesville community, because a competitive market means that companies will be doing their best to offer the best service at the best price. Also, it gives residents an opportunity for another source of income and increases the earnings and expenses in the area of UF.
·        Ultimate customers will have the opportunity to get their food delivered faster and efficiently, thanks to an increase in supply of companies like Bite Squad, and gives them the option at the same time to start making money by becoming a delivery driver whenever they want.

Florida-Cuba travel is in flux. Some airlines want in and others opt out.

·        This article written on January 22, 2019, talks about how air travel to Cuba is in a flux. It explains how multiple companies have been opting out of the service by reducing their frequency of flights or disapproving an expansion. On the other side American Airlines has taken over the market share of USA-Cuba flights and has become “a near monopoly level of service”, as stated by JetBlue, and added that “it would negatively impact other carriers”. It says that after Obama’s opening in the relationship with Cuba carriers assumed that it would continue, and it would be only a matter of time for the embargo to be lifted. But after president Trump started his administration it only went backward.
·        The problem stated in this article is how flights to Cuba are covering demand effectively, due to unexpected shifts in demographic preferences. Miami has an overwhelming demand and is not fully attended while in other cities are having issues to fill the airplane’s seats with passengers.
·        The problem and opportunity here exist for airlines, which are having issues to properly identify patterns in customers willing to flight to Cuba, and most of it is due to the unstable political relationship Cuba-USA.

Even out at sea, the air on cruise ships may be dirtier than you think, study shows

·        The article goes about a study done by professor Ryan Kennedy, from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health about air pollution in four cruise ships last year. He found that the number of ultrafine particles (which are harmful for the human body) is higher than expected on these ships, and he even compared them to cities like Taipei and Beijing. The author includes the reaction of cruise lines executives and their answers were basically that such studies weren’t scientifically relevant and were inaccurate, and that while the ship is moving there is no risk.
·        The problem-opportunity here is the finding that probably air in cruise ships is not as healthy as the public thought and organizations should dig deeper in this to find a real answer. It is proven that ultrafine particles and harmful and carcinogens and laws should be established to protect human lives.
·        In this case everyone traveling in a cruise will be affected by the pollution in the air, and my biggest concern is the ship employees who are exposed to such particles all the time.

Government shutdown strains emerge in US air travel system

·        This article talks about the aftermath of the partial government shutdown for 34 days and counting. The author talks about how airport staffs are very upset about the situation and cannot afford to go to work without getting paid anymore. It also makes reference to the effect that this is having in airlines, which have seen their revenues greatly affected due to fear in public. David Koenig (the author) says that so far security and air controllers haven’t been compromised, but the lack of TSA staff has created long waiting lines in airports.
·        The problem is that due to the government shutdown many federal employees are not receiving their paycheck and are very upset about it. It’s been 34 days already and it has started to be visible the lack of motivation and efficiency at work, a lot of people are absent to their position and it is only getting worse
·        In this situation the most affected people by the government shutdown is the airport staff, who depend on their wages to live and some of them have kids to feed. It is very sad to here that, as always, blue collars are the most affected by the decisions of the top executives of the country.

6A) Economic & Regulatory Trends

Regulatory: Legalization of Marijuana

  • During the last few years, the has been a strong movement to legalize cannabis. When this process started, the main purpose was to have access to medical marijuana, like CBD which is a component found in weed. It would help prevent and fight some diseases (further details in next bullet point). Now a days, people are also seeking the legalization of recreational Marijuana (as of January 2019, there are 33 states that completely legalized marijuana for medical use, and 10 states that allow it for recreational use). The legal use of cannabis will also change the game for many people like drug dealers, and cigarette and alcohol, which can see their sales affected by a shift in popular preferences.
  • Studies show that cannabis and its components can help treat many diseases and disorders, and people suffering from cancer, diseases that affect the immune system, inflammation, pain, seizures, and mental disorders could benefit from it (www.drugabuse.gov). On the recreational side of it, marijuana is not considered an addictive substance, which could be very attractive to people who want to avoid becoming dependent and still want to enjoy the “pleasure” of a stimulant. It is the opposite with substances like caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and other
  • The level of difficulty of the opportunity depends on the resources available. I think that for a small startup it would be extremely hard to succeed in the business of cannabis because of the huge competition out there, and because it is very sensitive to regulations and changes. In the other hand, I think that it becomes easier for a big company with tons of cash in invest and the ability to lobby some
  • I saw this opportunity because I try to stay on top of news that influence the stock market, and it was very interesting to follow how the federal government and the states would act, also how very soon, companies and individuals were trying to take advantage of any situation related to marijuana. But definitely got more into it when marijuana companies started doing IPOs. My view of this opportunity could be different from someone else because they might not agree on its medical benefits or think that it affects people in a negative way when consumed for recreation.

Regulatory: Internet Service in Cuba

  • ·        I am Cuban and I get informed of how things are going in Cuba quite often. One of the last big surprising changes was the announcement that ETECSA (national and only telecommunication company in Cuba) would start giving 3G mobile data service to the public. Internet has been around in the world since the 90’s and 3G mobile data actually started in 2003. It means that Cuba has fallen behind in the participation of the world-wide network and the recently developed term Internet of Things. This opens a whole new world of both national and foreign companies since it increases the reaching capacity of marketing campaigns and news.
  • ·        The customers for internet in Cuba would be basically the whole country, especially the Cuban “middle” or “high” class, and the opportunity to reach those people should be taken for companies that want to target that market segment, and for me it should be mandatory that Cuban companies take advantage of internet service too.
  • ·        I think it is really easy to take advantage of this opportunity since the only action needed is to create websites or develop a digital marketing campaign.
  • ·        This option came to my mind, and probably not too many people because I am Cuban, and I like to stay informed of the regulations and changes that occur in Cuba. I spent 18 years of my live in Cuba and have gone several times in the last few years and I have been able to get different perspective about opportunities in Cuba. I have experienced how people think differently now and how people have started to understand the advantages and disadvantages if been connected to internet.

Economic: Trade War

  • ·        The trade war going on between US (the biggest consumer in the world) and China (the biggest producer in the world) has affected the economy of almost every country in the world. One of the first effects was the drop like a brick of the stock market due to fear among investors. In this case some optimistic investor could take advantage of the low prices to buy stocks “on sale”. Another impact of this conflicts is that national companies now have to pay higher taxes to buy commodities from China, and to sell products and services in that country.
  • ·        Examples of industries affected: technology and automakers. In the other side, it should boost the national economy since it will force companies to increase manufacturing processes in US and use national produced commodities. Another effect of the increased demand for national manufacturing and production of commodities is the increase of jobs availability, lowering unemployment rates. This creates another “customer” for this opportunity (unemployed people).
  • ·        I think this situation is really challenging to exploit because every step in the negotiations could be crucial and might lead to an ugly end like a third World War or negative consequences for the American economy.
  • ·        Like most immigrants, I am always trying to pay attention to what President Trump does, and it has been one of his most wild decisions. It also came to my mind because I follow the stock market and it was a headline in every single newspaper for a while.

Economic: Increase in the Consumption of Organic Food

  • ·        As the information shown in the previous link, sales of organic foods have been increasing constantly during the last couple of decades. It is due to the increased in the awareness of people of how bad all the chemicals and additives in non-organic foods are. Also, after a long period of time where the number of cases like diabetes, heart attacks, and obesity was extremely high, people started concerning about eating healthier and think more about what is in their food.
  • ·        Customers in this case would vary, it would go from wealthy families (which are usually more educated in this topic and have the resources to constantly buy organic food) because organic food tends to be more expensive; to people suffering from diseases like diabetes and cardiac issues. Also, most “fitness” people, who are gym freaks and love to stay on top of their bodies and health.
  • ·        It would be an easy opportunity if people were informed on the benefits of organic foods and understand the advantages of purchasing so. The challenge is that because it tends to be more expensive compared to non-organic similar, people are not willing to sacrifice their purchasing power.
  • ·        I like to be in shape and eat healthy, it feels good for me. Therefore, I always like to know what I’m eating and try to get the best quality food, that is why I started learning about organic foods and realized that it was becoming a trend.

4A) Opportunity: college books and supplies.

I think that one of the biggest problems that college students face every semester is the high price of school materials. It has become a standard for an average student in a public four-year undergraduate program to spend well over a $1000 (according to College Board) in books and supplies. In this amount is not included the cost of a portable computer (laptop, tablets, etc.), which is indispensable now a days and range from a simple notebook (about $300) to a high-end computer (up to $2000). This is a concern for college students, specially from low- and medium-income families, when at the beginning of each semester they have to buy the material for the new courses. To avoid increasing the cost of attending college, most of these students try to rent or buy used books, which are less expensive. The problem with this is that books companies come with new editions of their books practically every year and, somehow, enforce schools and professors to use the new editions. I am sure that this problem is affecting about 70% of undergraduate students.

Prototypical person: Students from low- and medium-income families, and who are attending undergraduate programs.

Interviews

1.      Female (20 years), student (freshmen) and employee part time:

·       Why do you spend so much on books and supplies?

Schools and professors are very strict with what we need to use, and companies take advantage of that, charging high prices.

·       When did you become aware of this?

Even before I started college, I heard stories of friends who paid even about $300 for a book and $100 for a calculator, and only used them for a semester.

·       When did you start having this problem?

In my previous college (small and private) it wasn’t a big problem, but since I started this semester at Miami Dade College, I was required to purchase a subscription to McGraw-Hill Connect, which was $189.

·       What do you do to address this problem?

There isn’t much I can do to change the fact that I have to spend a ton of money in books and supplies, I start saving money ahead of time and ask someone to lend me his books or something like that.

·       Has it worked? Are you satisfied with the results?

It hasn’t been very effective, since I have to at least spend $200 for some things that I will barely use and could be using the money to cover other needs.

2.      Male (21 years), student (junior):

·       Why do you spend so much on books and supplies?

Most of the required books for my classes are over $100, and they are not even physical and only give me a subscription for a short period of time, which not only means that I don’t own the book, but if I need a future reference, I won’t be able to use that book.

·       When did you become aware of this?

The moment I realized that college books and supplies were so expensive was when I had to buy my first one. I had never heard anything about the price of these things, and no one ever told me, also, because I come from another country, it wasn’t something that I would consider.

·       When did you start having this problem?

So far it has been six semesters with this problem and the issue is that they add up. It is hard to get a return on these books because most of them are online and for the hardcopies they make new editions all the time, plus they lose value when you use them. The issue with the rest of the material is that you never know when you are going to need them again. This becomes a problem at the beginning of every semester, when I have to spend a minimum of $200 just in books, and because of my major, I have to use calculators and so far, I have been required to use three different types of calculators (the worst part is that I didn’t need them again). The other thing that bothers me is to buy scantrons to take exams, when the school is supposed to take care of that.

·       What do you do to address this problem?

Right now, there isn’t much I can do, most people tell you to sell the books, but I already told what’s the issue with that. What is left is to buy or rent (if possible) used books when it is a hardcopy, or to wait the first week of class to see if the book is actually needed, but it means that I will start behind everyone with the assignments and readings.

·       Has it worked? Are you satisfied with the results?

I would say that doing those things help a little bit, but then it becomes stressful, because you pay more attention to what the book is going to cost, where to get it and how.

3.      Female (42), student (senior graduating) and full-time employee:

·       Why do you spend so much on books and supplies?

Medicine Books are way too expensive to buy, and when you buy a used one from previous students, there is a new edition of the book with a small change. I also have to buy all the instruments for my career (optometry), I looked it up online and it was cheaper than directly from the school, which is mandatory. Also, as part of my school policies I had to buy a tablet. Ah! And in the bookstore is even more expensive.

·       When did you become aware of this? When did you start having this problem?

Since my first semester which was in a public college (Miami Dade College), but now I am in a private university (Nova) and it is even worse. It is my headache every beginning of a semester.

·       What do you do to address this problem?

In my case, books are hardcopy and allow me to rent them most of the time. I tried to buy used books, but they were in bad conditions and I decided that I would rent them new instead. For the other things I had no other option that buy them from the school for a high price.

·       Has it worked? Are you satisfied with the results?

In my case, I am fine with the fact that I has been able to get new books, but I am aware that it is more expensive than the other way, but I know that it is a problem for most people. Anyways, I would like to find a way to save more money on books and school supplies.

General reflection:

I saw a common patter among the three prospective customers and is that they all agreed in the that books and supplies are very expensive and feel like schools don’t make it easier. For example, my third interviewee was mad at the school for having such high prices in the bookstore, making it impossible to afford anything from there. Another observation that I could may is that immigrants are not aware of this problem until they start college. When it comes to how face this problem, they know that the first option is to buy used books or rent them. When it comes to online books and by subscription, which is a new trend, and also the fact that editorials come up with new editions constantly ruins the aforementioned strategy and forces you to buy the new option.

Summary:

After this little research, I believe that there is a real problem with the cost of books and school supply for college students, and that there is a huge opportunity to help them have a better college experience. I even think that this issue not only has a instant repercussion on the student, but it is also a long term problem for them and the government. The student debt (more than $1.5 trillion) has been increasing drastically to the point that there might not be enough money for the near future and the number of students falling on default is expected to be 40% by 2023. I think that I have a better picture of the problem now because this study confirms my idea and gives me feedback on how different people react to the same situation. This also helped me to narrow down to the most important problems, needs and opportunities. Feedback is a very important tool in life, but specially for entrepreneurs who are working with big groups of people with different characteristics and experiences. Therefore, listening and adapting to those opinions should be the right thing to do if I want to succeed as an entrepreneur. The only moment when it shouldn’t be like that, is when we realize that we are going far away from our original idea, then we might consider changing the target market segment.

3A)Entrepreneurship Story, learning from failure.

There have been just a few times in my life where I have felt like an entrepreneur. One of them was when I tried to start a mobile car wash with a friend. We had it all planned, we bought all the instruments we would need and the trailer to carry them around, later on, with the earnings, we would finance a minivan (here all instruments would go inside the minivan) to have two cars. Then, we made a deal with Washe, an app that works just like Uber but for car washes, people would request the service on the app, and we show up and do the job. I was in school, so I invested most of the money, and I would work just a few hours a week, while my friend would be full time. But then we got a problem, my friend got his license suspended and we couldn’t start by the time expected (he wasn’t able to drive). After a couple of months when he got his driver license back, he got in a car crash, which meant that we would have a car to do the job. After a while I got a job and decided that it wasn’t worthwhile anymore.

I don’t regret this experience, even though it was a rough period, it taught me a lot. Now I know that doing business isn’t just finding a need, or think about something “cool” and done, you start “making money”. Businesses take time and effort, they require patience and thinking about what could go wrong and how to avoid it. Business requires to be with the right people, because from the moment you get involve in one deal you must keep your word.

I was born and raised in Cuba, I lived there for most of my life and it is hard to be an entrepreneur and start your own business there because of the government policies and the lack of resources. But interestingly enough, I always liked to learn about economics, commerce and how businesses work, that is why my major is in Business Administration. Because of my experience from Cuba, starting a business isn’t something that comes to my mind naturally and that is why I wanted to minor in Entrepreneurship. I think that understanding how businesses start and how they work is essential for anyone in this country. Also, I want to be able to help others that have ideas but don’t know how to bring them to reality or lack the resources to start. In ENT 3003 I hope that I learn how to think like an entrepreneur, how to solve problems using critical thinking and analyzing situations, and I expect to learn what are the different resources that could be used for a startup and how to find them. This course is a requirement for my minor, but as I said before, I think that it is an interesting class that would be useful for everybody. Image result for memes about carwash

2A) Bug List

1. I live at Gainesville Place apartments and a couple of months ago all the little trash cans around the condo were removed, it really bothers me because now I have to walk longer distances to throw out my trash, but it is also a problem when I am walking, and I have something to toss away

a. It is easier and cheaper to maintain, plus is less work for the maintenance people

2. There is no direct bus from my community (GP/Enclave, which is big one) the shopping center where Walmart and some other supermarkets and stores are. It is difficult for a person with no car to go shopping and bring the bunch of full bags back to home.

a. It could be because where Walmart is (between Clark Butler Blvd and the I75) is an area that has been growing recently and people in charge of public transportation haven’t catch up with the expansion, or because they think that it is not worth it to create a new route.

3. There are no street names within my apartment complex (GP) and it makes it really annoying to give a specific address to a person or website, because not even putting the apartment number in the map sends you straight to my apartment. The person coming has to ask in the Clubhouse for instructions or a map. This is a problem when the Clubhouse is closed. The only way is to send a dropped pin on Google maps, but sometimes it is not possible.

a. I cannot find a good reason for it, it might be because no one has thought about it, or because the legal paperwork.

4. During winter, when it is really cold outside people dress to get warm, and then when you get in the bus, it is hot inside and you start sweating unless you remove your scarf, or your coat, and then you have to put it back to get out, and most of the time it is annoying because winter clothing is bulky. During the summer or warmer times is the opposite, is hot outside and freezing in the bus.

a. It happens because the bus driver sets the time to an extreme opposed to the outside temperature

5. Traffic in Miami during rush hours is so bad, there is traffic jam everywhere and heavy traffic on the streets that it takes forever to get to a place that normally would be 15 minutes.

a. The reason for it is that people don’t live in the same area or close by where they work or study, so a mass of people have to commute every day during similar hours. The other reason for it is that public transportation barely exists, is inefficient and expensive, and people need to travel long distances. Public projects look to expand and “improve” streets and highways, but it hasn’t been working at least during the las couple of decades. There was one time when I got surprise, because I was stock on traffic in Hialeah, a city from Miami, and still there were one or two cars parked in every single house (plus all the cars on the streets).

6. Here in Gainesville public transportation is good, there are many different routes (can be improved a little bit more) and is not that expensive (free for students), but it is easy to miss bus stops because they don’t have a common name (they have a code that is different in some sources and traffic apps give them a different identification)

a. Bus stops don’t have an identification with the address where they are located or a name that identifies them and help people where they are by putting a signal in the bus with the name of the next stop. It requires coordination, but still I think that is because someone in charge is being lazy.

7. For Federal Financial Aid procedures, the adult age is 24, it makes that me and a lot of people who doesn’t get economic support from their parents don’t get full financial aid.

a. It is a measure to reduce the cost from giving grants and loans to more students.

8. Recycling is little or not encouraged in Miami (here in Gainesville a little bit more but is still far away from where it should be) and government and companies don’t make it easy at all. For example, here in my community there is only one spot for recycling and is always full and like a mess.

a. Most of the time recycling requires to change how the place or the company works, and it is more expensive. It also happens because people are not fully aware of environmental problems and the benefits of recycling and, therefore, they don’t request a better service for it.

9. Access to online books and assignments from editors like Pearson and McGraw-Hill Connect are very expensive, and still the service is for 6 months, and have to renew it for every class. For example, I had to take 2 accounting classes that used the same book but different parts of it, and I had to pay $250 ($125 each) to be able to do my homework and have access to the book.

a. Profits, it is all based on profits and copyrights. They try to squeeze every penny out of students.

10. Prices in the United States of America are never the sticker price, it could because it includes taxes, or “convenience” fees, anything similar, but a buyer will never pay the “sticker” price.

a. I think it is a marketing strategy, because in other counties like in Europe taxes are included in the price. It makes it look cheaper.

11. I haven’t been able to have a Wi-Fi router in my apartment because each time I connect it, it will have Wi-Fi signal, but the network won’t have access to the internet. I have tried multiple things, and changing the router, but nothing works, and I have access to the internet plugging the Ethernet cable into an adapter (which I had to buy) that goes into one of my USB ports.

a. It could be because a configuration that I am missing, or some specifications that the Wi-Fi router needs to have that I don’t know.

12. Most gyms use a locker system where you set the pin/passcode and when you open it again, it will reset so the next person can use it by creating their personal pin. It turns out that most of these lockers are always stuck and cannot be used because it won’t let you set a pin. I have seen this happening in my condo’s gym, the school’s gym, etc.

a. It could be because people don’t know how to use them properly, or because lockers need some maintenance, or because no staff member checks to see lockers are working properly

13. It bothers me that I cannot use my graphing calculator (TI-84 Plus C) for classes like Marketing (which uses simple calculations) and Business Statistics, and now I had bought 3 calculators for my last semester and the first week of this one (and they are not cheap) because now my Finance class requires a specific financial calculator.

a. I have heard that some calculators can be upgraded with some programs, but I don’t know how they work or how to do it, so that wouldn’t apply to me, but it is a rule to make it even, since they cannot check calculator by calculator.

14. When I have a doctor’s appointment and I arrive on time or a few minutes early, I have to wait for a long time to be assisted (and nothing else happens), but then if I arrive 15 minutes late, I have to reschedule the appointment and pay a fee.

a. This is a way to protect themselves and increase revenues from fees.

15. I used to work at my previous school and I was able to see a part of how Admissions, Financial Aid, and Advisement departments work, and they are usually a mess, they give the wrong information sometimes, you talk to two different persons in the same department and they tell you different things, there are misunderstandings among all the departments

a. The reason is miscommunication and lack of organization. Bad management

16. When I am watching an online class, I have no way to communicate with neither the professor nor a TA to ask a question or make a comment.

a. It might happen because it will take a lot of resources to make it happen, plus it probably makes the class go slower because the professor has to stop to read the questions and comments. That is why I suggest putting a TA for this task.

17. I have my own phone account (carrier), where the autopayment is linked to my credit card. A couple of months ago one of the persons included left the account and his phone was broken so he took it with him to hand it in in the other carrier, but he had to fix it first and it has taken a long time. The problem here is that the amount due ($700) was charged to my account, and I had no way to redirect it to his account to make him pay for his phone

a. It is a way of the company to protect themselves from scam and fraud, and to make sure that the payment is done.

18. One of my roommates have a cat, which is illegal in my condo, and the problem is that he barely takes care of the cat, and it stinks, the hair left is a mess, and sometimes scratches the furniture, etc. Also, sometimes he buys the cat some cheap food that makes her puke (in the living room)

a. It happens because he doesn’t have time to take care of the cat, and he doesn’t have money sometimes to buy the right food.

19. Education system is about rushing through content and memorizing it, not about learning and understanding the concepts and the reason why things are like that. A lot of content is included for a short period of time, to make it look like they are giving you tons of information, then you get tested to see how good your photographic memory is (in an exam where selecting random answers gives you more probability of getting the right answer than actually trying to remember), then that is translated into a ranked score that will define how “smart” you are and will be what employers will use to judge whether you are a good employee or not. For example, my Business Statistics class was all about the name of the rules and how to calculate a statistical concept, but I was never taught what to do when we get the final answer or what did that number mean.

a. I think it is an easy way for schools to justify what your paying and to try to make you do the work.

20. I hate how 99.99% of ads are made, specially on TV. They make people look dumb, and what appears in the video are all lies that come with a tiny sentence in one corner with an almost invisible color explaining that what your seeing is not real and that you shouldn’t try to do the same, or that it won’t be like that in real life.

a. This is the way of companies to increase sales, and wake people’s emotions towards the product and the company.

Reflection:
To do the list was not hard, even though I have never done anything similar to it, but it took me time to find so many bugs, and to find an explanation for them. I would say that the biggest challenge was to find a logical explanation for every single bug. At the same time, I think that it was a useful assignment because I never thought about all this issues that affect me and how easy would be to solve most of them.
As an extra bug I would like to add that I just realized that it is impossible to edit a text here in blogger, because if I add a character or a blank, it will delete the next space, which basically means that if I need to correct one word, I will need to rewrite the entire text.
